Due to the recent critical updates release by Microsoft for Windows 2008\7, ITS will be installing critical updates on all Windows Servers during our regularly scheduled maintenance window TODAY Thursday, May 14, 2015 between 10pm and 4am. The downtime for each server should be minimal, but the large time window is required to get all of the servers updated.  The updates are required to keep our servers secure from exploits and to reduce future downtime.

Please note that due to the connected nature of our services, this maintenance will affect ALL computer systems on campus.

We will also be patching all Windows workstations on campus. Within 48 hours of May 14, 2015 computers on campus running one of these operating systems will be installing these updates.

If you are prompted with the installation of these updates, please accept the updates.  Following the updates, you may be prompted to reboot your computer to finish the install.  As requested, when it is convenient, please save all of your work and reboot your computer.  If you are using a computer in a presentation environment please remember to boot your computer and connect it to the network at least one hour prior to your presentation to allow for patching and rebooting. This is to ensure that your presentation will not be interrupted with a prompt to reboot your workstation.

Wireless change

On Tuesday August 26th at 10:00pm, we will be completing the first stage of our wireless upgrade project. There will be a change of our WiFi network names from UNBC_SECURE_new to UNBC and from eduroam_new to eduroam.

The change will require reconfiguration of your wireless devices to use the new WiFi network names.

With the first stage we now enjoy the following benefits:

* Improved coverage and service by automatic tuning of the radios in the access points
* Improved bandwidth for the wireless network system as a whole
* The ability to detect and eliminate sources of interference such as (home WiFi routers etc.)
* The ability to roam across campus and have your running connection handed off to different AP’s as you travel throughout campus

With the second stage of the project we will be adding access points that will expand coverage inside buildings and allow for greater density of wireless devices in populated areas (such as the library).

Anti Virus upgrade

As part of our ongoing commitment to computer and data security here at UNBC, ITS will be starting a phased deployment of a new Anti-Virus/Anti-Malware product over the next several weeks.  For those that are interested, we will be replacing our old Symantec software with a new Trend Micro Security Suite to better protect our computers and our data.

During this process, which will take place in small groups over a the next 2-3 weeks, there should be no noticeable impact on your normal working day.  The software deployment will take place during a normal computer restart, and all that you may notice will be a few messages in your Windows notification tray shortly after logon that indicate that Symantec is having problems connecting to the server.  This is a normal part of the uninstalling of Symantec and should disappear in less than a minute.  After that, Trend Micro will install in the background and start protecting your computer automatically.  For a small number of users, you may be prompted to restart your computer.  If that prompt persists for more than a few minutes, please take the opportunity, *when you have time*, to restart your computer and complete the process.  Again, this is not the average user experience.
