Course Roles

Course roles define access and participation in the course. The course role is set when a user is enrolled (see Class Roster Management for information about enrolling users). The role can be edited from the Control Panel as shown in the image below,

Instructor: has access to and control over all Learn functions and the Control Panel. Can add course content, create and grade assessments and assignments, enroll and un-enroll students, etc.

Student: has access to all content, communication tools and assessments (unless hidden or restricted by instructor). Only student users can take assessments and receive grades in the Grade Book.

Teaching Assistant: has access and control over all Learn functions and the Control Panel except for certain User Management functions (eg. cannot remove an instructor from a course). Can add course content, create and grade assessments and assignments, etc. Has access to the Grade Book.

Please contact Grant Potter at the CTLT if you working with a teaching assistant and would like them to have access to your Learn course.

Course Builder: has access and control over all Learn functions and the Control Panel except for certain User Management functions (eg. cannot remove an instructor from a course). Does not have access to student grades.

Grader: has access and control over all Learn functions and the Control Panel except for certain User Management functions and Users and Groups. This role can be limited by the Instructor.

Guest: has no access to the Control Panel and typically can only view course materials with the exception of tests and assessments. Guests cannot post to the discussion board. This role can be limited by the Instructor.

Guests who have a UNBC.ca account may be added via the Control Panel (see Class Roster Management). Those not affiliated with UNBC as faculty, student, or staff will need to request a sponsored account from Grant Potter at the CTLT.

Please note: It is the Instructor’s responsibility to ensure that their Blackboard Course list is consistent with their Banner/FASTPortal student list, after each semester’s Add-Drop Deadline.
